Why we advocate

The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, along with its advocacy arm the Advocates for Senior Issues, works to share the needs and interests of seniors in West Michigan. Our main audiences are elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels of government to enact change for older adults and their caregivers. We have staff dedicated to learning, listening, and building a community for seniors while staying up-to-date on the latest policies and legislation impacting seniors.

How to Advocate

Advocates for Senior Issues encourages advocacy supporting the needs of older adults, specifically those in Western Michigan.

  • Advocacy includes contact with local, state and federal legislators and officials by letter, phone, fax, e-mail and face-to-face. Advocacy efforts may also include attending hearings and giving testimony.
  • Senior advocacy is non-partisan.

Advocates for Senior Issues is supported by the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan. The Federal Older Americans Act requires Area Agencies on Aging (AAAs) to undertake advocacy efforts on behalf of elders.

  • AAAs advocate for new programs for the elderly, more funds for existing programs, public policies that benefit the elderly, and assist older adults in advocating for themselves

MI Choice Medicaid Waiver

The MI Choice Waiver is a home and community-based program for eligible adults and adults with disabilities who meet income and asset criteria to receive long-term supports and services in their home.

PERSON-CENTERED

Most older adults and people with disabilities want to receive care at home rather than an institutional setting. MI Choice makes this possible for over 15,000 Michigan residents.

Michigan spends only 43% of Medicaid LTSS funds on Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS), far below the national average of HCBS spending of 55%. Rebalancing Michigan’s long-term care system by increasing access to the MI Choice program supports individual choice.

QUALITY

MI Choice participants report high levels of satisfaction with the program, with 90% of participants expressing satisfaction with their care. The AAAWM MI Choice program rates highly in measures of clinical quality, as demonstrated by our NCQA Accreditation in Case Management for Long-Term Services and Supports.

COST-EFFECTIVE

The MI Choice program serves nursing facility-eligible participants at a cost of $88.31 per day, which is 58% less than the Medicaid nursing facility daily rate of $208.50 per day, allowing 2.4 participants to be served for the cost of one nursing home resident.
