LGBT Senior Resource Guide
The Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM) and the Grand Rapids Pride Center (GRPC) collaborated to create a resource guide for LGBT seniors in West Michigan. Resources strives to assist LGBT seniors and caregivers in locating services that are safe and affirming. The agencies and businesses in this guide have made a commitment to serve all seniors equally - with dignity and respect.
This Resource Guide is a result of a two-year grant funded by the Michigan Health Endowment Fund. The objective of this grant is to reduce isolation for LGBT older adults, by raising awareness of LGBT affirming services available to them. AAAWM and the GRPC worked with Services and Advocacy for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Elders (SAGE) Metro Detroit for leadership on how to create this Resource Guide. Moving forward, we will continue outreach, education and vetting of West Michigan businesses in order to expand offerings of affirming agencies serving LGBT seniors and caregivers.
AAAWM’s mission is “to provide older persons and persons with a disability an array of services designed to promote independence and dignity in their homes and their communities.” Creating this guide supports that mission of providing ALL seniors with services that can help them age in place. GRPC played a major role in helping create this guide. Their mission, “Empowering the LGBT community through supportive services and awareness,” helped provide the expertise and resources needed to form the guide.
We hope this guide provides you with the resources you need to engage in vital living as you age. AAAWM and GRPC will continue to provide resources and support to the LGBT community and all older adults in West Michigan.
