Taking Stock of the Flock: Therapy Chickens & Adult Day Programs Go Hand in Hand

We’ve all heard of therapy dogs, goat yoga, and even cat cafés, but have you ever met a therapy chicken? These feathered companions are making a big impact, bringing joy, comfort, and even cognitive stimulation to older adults, particularly those experiencing memory loss or other challenges related to aging.

Recently, SarahCare Adult Day Center, a partner of the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM), welcomed Jodi Wilterdink and her therapy chickens for a special visit. Jodi’s work at Touching Hearts at Home - Grand Rapids and their Community Chicken Therapy Program goes hand in hand with her love for animals. As Jodi introduced her birds to the adult day participants, smiles spread across the room. The gentle clucking, the feel of soft feathers, and the simple act of holding a chicken sparked joy, laughter, and even moments of reminiscence. For some, the experience brought back memories of raising chickens on a farm, while others simply enjoyed the soothing presence of these unexpected therapy animals.

The Power of Therapy Chickens

Animal-assisted therapy has long been recognized for its ability to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and increase feelings of well-being. While therapy dogs and cats are the most common, chickens provide a unique alternative, especially for individuals with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The sensory engagement of touching, hearing, and observing the birds, can stimulate memory recall and improve their mood.

For Jodi, the journey into therapy chickens was personal. During the pandemic, she found solace in caring for her flock. In her previous work with the senior population, she understood the healing power of companionship and saw an opportunity to share that comfort with others. Today, she blends her caregiving background with her passion for animals, bringing her therapy chickens to communities in need of connection and joy.

Adult Day Programs: A Haven for Engagement and Support

While therapy animals provide moments of happiness, adult day programs offer structured, ongoing support for older adults and their caregivers. These programs create a space where seniors can engage in social activities, receive health monitoring, and participate in stimulating programs tailored to their needs. From art and music therapy to exercise classes and pet therapy sessions, adult day centers ensure that participants stay active, engaged, and connected to their community.

For caregivers, these programs offer crucial respite, allowing them time to work, run errands, or simply recharge while knowing their loved ones are in a safe, supportive environment. The combination of innovative approaches, such as therapy chickens, and traditional care services makes adult day programs an invaluable resource for families navigating the challenges of aging.

Bringing More Joy to Senior Care

The success of SarahCare’s therapy chicken visit is just one example of how creative engagement strategies can enhance the well-being of older adults. Whether through animal-assisted therapy, group activities, or personalized care, the goal remains the same: to help seniors live fulfilling, connected lives.
