Celebrate Arab American Heritage Month

In April, join the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan to celebrate Arab American Heritage Month! Arab American Heritage Month was first nationally recognized in 2021. This month is a time to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Arab Americans to our society, culture, and history. Arab Americans have made significant contributions to fields such as science, medicine, politics, business, and the arts, among many others. In fact, the state of Michigan has one of the five largest Arab American populations in the country. Arab Americans have enriched our society with diversity, culture, and heritage. We must take the time to acknowledge and appreciate their contributions and achievements.
We have compiled a list of resources for you to learn more about Arab American culture and explore some of Arab Americans' accomplishments.
- Read a book by an Arab American Author. Reading books by diverse authors helps you see the world through a different perspective and learn about the complexity of their lived experiences. Some Arab American authors include Khalil Gibran, Laila Lalani, Moustafa Bayoumi, and Naomi Shibab.
- Explore history, art, and culture, through the Arab American National Museum and the Barjeel Art Foundation.
- Try new recipes! Food is very important in all cultures. This month try some new recipes or incorporate new spices into your meals. Some of our favorite dishes are couscous, falafel, and tabouleh.
- If you are an employer, consider incorporating inclusive practices for individuals who have religious observances outside of the major recognized holidays that may include fasting, private prayer, and personal time off. Working with Human Resources to identify the ability for staff to have the ability to flex their work schedules, observe holidays outside of what is offered at your organization, or have a private space where one can practice their spiritual observances in the office creates an inclusive work environment.
“This initiative provides an opportunity for Americans to learn about Arab American identity and culture while encouraging Arab Americans to take pride in their contributions to America,” shared Warren David, Co-founder of the Arab American Foundation.
