Advocacy Alert: Essential Aging-at-Home Programs Face Uncertain Future, Putting West Michigan Seniors at Risk

Thousands of older adults in West Michigan rely on essential programs like home-delivered meals, in-home care, transportation, and respite for caregivers to maintain their independence and age safely at home. These services not only enhance the quality of life for seniors but also provide significant benefits to families, caregivers, and the broader community. However, funding for these critical programs through the Older Americans Act (OAA) and Medicaid is currently uncertain, threatening the well-being of older adults and the sustainability of long-term care solutions in the region.

These programs are not luxuries—they are lifelines,” explained Kendrick Heinlein, President and CEO of the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan (AAAWM). “Without them, thousands of older adults would lose the support they need to remain safe and independent.”

For over 50 years, these cost-effective OAA programs, administered by Area Agencies on Aging nationwide, have had strong bipartisan support because they are proven, cost-effective, and essential in helping seniors age at home while reducing hospitalizations and delaying or preventing costly institutional care. Demand in West Michigan continues to grow, with over 18,000 seniors in AAAWM’s nine-county region currently being served and waitlists stretching over eight months for some programs. For many, these services provide more than just care—they offer security, caregiver respite, and peace of mind. "I feel very safe living alone, knowing your service is a button away," shared one grateful client.

Advocating for older adults has always been at the heart of AAAWM’s mission. Now, we are calling on policymakers to uphold this commitment and take action to sustain these critical services. Without continued investment, more seniors will be forced into costly institutional care, placing a greater financial burden on families, taxpayers, and the healthcare system.

We need swift action to ensure older adults can continue living safely and independently,” added Heinlein. If you'd like to support this advocacy, you can find our Advocacy Toolkit below.
